Contents
We consider the symmetry groups of surfaces - mapping class groups. In particular, we will study big mapping class groups, i.e. these defined by surfaces of infinite type such as the Loch Ness monster.
We plan to cover the following:
- surfaces, curves, and the curve graph
- classification of surfaces of infinite type
- Birman exact sequence
- generators of mapping class groups
- mapping class groups as Polish groups
- symplectic representation
