Description
The seminar will be an introduction to the topic of Geometric Structures on surfaces. After a brief introduction we will concentrate on examples of particularly interesting geometries, like hyperbolic geometry, affine geometry, and real and complex projective geometry. We will see how to locally model a manifold on a base model space, and we will see examples where we can classify all possible geometric structures on a fixed topological manifold.
Last year, a seminar with a similar topic was offered. This seminar will be completely independent on the seminar last year. The talks will be very different, with the only exception of the first introductory talk, so also students who already followed the seminar last year can attend this one.
At the organizational meeting several topics will be proposed. Among them, you can choose one topic you are interested in. Once you have agreed on the topic of your project with me, you should contact me to discuss the content of your talk in more detail. Please let me help you during the preparation of your presentation. Every student is expected to hand in a short report as well.
Prerequisites
This seminar is aimed at students who are interested in differential geometry. Students are expected to have a good knowledge of calculus and a certain familiarity with the differential geometry of manifolds. There are several topics for students to choose from, and hence any interested students are welcome to attend. The seminar is open for bachelor and master students. The seminar will be taught in English.Schedule
