Let p and l be two distinct odd prime numbers. The Legendre symbol (p,l) is defined as 1 if p is a square modulo l, and -1 if it is not. The law of quadratic reciprocity gives a surprising relation between (p,l) and (l,p). I will explain wide extensions of this law via class field theory, and various applications to the arithmetic of algebraic groups.
