We will review the classical notions of kernels of positive and negative type, classical in representation theory. For instance, positive kernels on a set X are simply functions of two variables on X, which are the pullback of the scalar product by a map from X to a Hilbert space. Afterwards, we will discuss the less classical notion of kernels of hyperbolic type and give interesting examples of such kernels. This will lead us to a tour of the geometry of the infinite dimensional hyperbolic space. This is based on a joint work with Nicolas Monod.
